Description

Kidwelly - Cydweli, is a town built on a rich tapestry of honour, strength, courage, and, above all, faith. Its spiritual landscape has been shaped by centuries of devotion, from the early influences of Celtic Christianity to the enduring presence of St. Mary’s Church and the vibrant nonconformist chapels that once thrived in its streets. In the 7th to 11th centuries, Welsh saints like David, Cadoc, and Teilo laid the foundations of Christian communities in the area. By the 12th century, the Norman influence brought the establishment of a Benedictine priory around 1110 under Bishop Roger of Salisbury, which became a cornerstone of religious life. In the 14th century, St. Mary’s Church emerged as a focal point, drawing pilgrims to its revered alabaster statue of the Virgin Mary. Despite the suppression of the priory during the Reformation in 1539, St. Mary’s remained a steadfast parish church. The 18th and 19th centuries saw the rise of Methodism and nonconformist chapels, reflecting evolving religious practices. Through every era, faith has remained at the heart of Kidwelly—in its churches, chapels, and the everyday lives of its people. This spiritual legacy, passed down through generations, continues to define the town we know and love today.
