Frank Smale was born in Adamsdown, Cardiff, on 15 March 1892. He ran away to sea while young and joined the Royal Navy before the war. During the First World War he served on HMS Bellerophon. In 1918 he married Gladys Matthews, the sister of a ship-mate; he left the Navy in 1924/5.
