Photographs of King George V's visit to the fleet in 1916
Description
Frank Smale of Cardiff was in the Royal Navy in the First World War. In 1916 he served as a Petty Officer on HMS Bellerophon (including the Battle of Jutland on 31 May). These photographs were taken when King George V visited the fleet in 1916, on board HMS Benbow. (Both HMS Bellerophon and HMS Benbow were in the 4th Battle Squadron - 4BS). The captions on the photographs say 'King's visit to the Fleet, 1916'; 'Ships' companies of 4BS on board HMS Benbow for march past'; 'Cheering the King as he left Benbow'; 'Quarter deck of Benbow'; King with captains of 4BS on Quarter Deck of Benbow'; 'King George V with Vice-Admiral Sturdee following'.
