Description

The Cardiff Caledonian Society Centenary Booklet contains the history of the Society from its foundation in 1886 until 1986. It also includes the aims and objectives of the society, information on its members and membership scheme, as well as details about its social events, fundraising and relief activities.

The Society was thus founded to provide a social outlet for Scottish residents in Cardiff as well as financial aid for Scottish people in Wales and Scotland. Its members would organise dinners and parties, such as the St. Andrew’s Night Dinner, Burns Night and Halloween Night, as well as dancing lessons, summer picnics and sports outings. These served to keep the culture of Scotland alive within Cardiff as well as to collect funds and donations which provide various aids to Scottish people of working class background around the UK. These funds are managed by the Relief Committee. The Society’s purpose of relief is mentioned in the booklet, as it is stated in the minutes of the General Committee for 1892-1893: “That the bringing together in closer union of true Scotsmen resident in this town of Cardiff, who while cherishing a deep regard for the town of their adoption, yet are desirous of showing they do not forget the land of their birth by helping their poorer and less fortunate countrymen, and thus preventing them becoming a burden to the Town.”(p.16)
