Inspirational BAME Figures

A collection that celebrates contributions by inspirational BAME figures, including Paul Robeson who inspired the Welsh nation, and also community leaders, religious leaders and individuals who have served their community in a professional capacity. Others have inspirational stories about their family's migration.

Darwin Hinds was Wales' first black councillor and later served as mayor for Barry Town Council in the 1960s and Mrs Vernster Cyril who worked in the Royal Gwent Hospital received an award as Midwife of the Year by the British Journal of Midwifery in 2006. Other notable figures included in this collection are Mrs May Ling Evans, Chair of the Newport Chinese Community Group, Abby Farah MBE, Somalian seaman and entrepreneur who became a community leader in Barry and his son, Abdulrahim Abby Farah, Deputy Secretary General for the United Nations who played an important role in the talks to free Nelson Mandela.
