John says that he has been suffering from diarrhoea but is much better now. He has not had an opportunity to have his picture taken but is sending home a lock of hair instead.

They have left Vicksburg and are now at Muligan Bend which is about twenty-seven miles up the river. It is a much better place to camp and John says that he is sleeping much better here.
