Wrongly labelled, this photograph in fact shows the Mustang hydraulic grab crane charging aluminium process scrap to the Harris Baler. By baling loose scrap trimmings and scrapped sheet, the metal was transformed into 24" x 36" rectangular units that were easier to charge to the melting furnaces in the Foundry. Through process yield for the rolling mill was 60-70% and so about a third of the metal cast was returned via the baling route to the scrap furnaces. The baler was an integral part of the recycling process and when it broke down it could mean melting furnaces standing idle waiting for their next alloy charge to arrive.
