During World War 1, Mosul was part of the Ottoman Empire which sided with Germany. When Germany was defeated in 1918, British forces occupied Mosul, which then became part of British occupied Iraq between 1918 and 1920. Th grandfather of this photo's owner is one of the British soldiers.
