Harold Gwyn Davies Royal Navy

Harold Gwyn Davies, known as Gwyn, served in the Royal Navy between 1954 and 1966. He joined as a boy Sailor aged 15 and graduated from HMS Ganges, the recruit school for boy Sailors. Gwyn grew up on the Welsh borders in the Golden Valley, Herefordshire. His family had connections with Wales and he would eventually move to Wales in the early 2000's, settling in Penrhyn-coch near Aberystwyth with his wife Patricia. During his time in the Navy, Gwyn became multi skilled in the Communications branch. He obtained senior grade in Signals and Telegraphy, eventually instructing the skills to junior Sailors. In 1956 Gwyn saw active service in the Suez War aboard HMS Decoy. He went on to serve aboard several classes of ships, travelling throughout Asia and the far east. His favourite shore base was Malta and he enjoyed servicing on the light cruisers Lion and Tiger. Gwyn's account offers a fascinating insight into life in the Royal Navy of the 1950's and 60's.
