Description

Date: 23 October 1914

Transcript:

SIX MONTHS FOR ALIEN ENEMY.

Conrad Hahn, an alien, was charged with giving a false registration.

P.C. Brinson stated that on Monday, the 5th instant, he visited the s.s. Gity of Swansea, at Barry Docks, and suspecting the defendant of being a German, took him into custody. The defendant protested that he was a Finn, but could not speak that language, having been taken to Hamburg when he was ten years of age. He had been to sea for eight years, two of which he served in English ships. He admitted having crossed from Cardiff to Rotterdam at the commencement of the war, and there saw a doctor with a view to joining the army, but was rejected. When asked by witness what Army he intended joining he became confused and said "any army."

In prisoner's bag witness found a German-English dictionary, a notebook, and a Seaman's Union book bearing the name Carl Bohm, an Austrian. At the police station defendant said his name was Conrad Hohn, and that he was a Hungarian. When charged with being a German he made no reply.

Hohn was sent to prison for six months with hard labour.
