Interview with Linda Wainwright by Vicky Macdonald
Description
Short interview conducted by Vicky MaCdonald during the ‘Longest Yarn’ with visitors that shared personal memories and family stories in reaction to the exhibition. The Longest Yarn exhibition was a month-long tribute to the War Effort behind the D-Day Landings of 1944 - displaying a 3D tapestry depicting D-Day in 80 panels – was held at the Holy Trinity Church, Llandudno (October 2–27, 2024).
In this interview, Linda Wainwright shares her family's tragic experiences during World War II. Her grandparents were killed when a bomb hit their Manchester home, and her aunt died from severe burns shortly after. Linda’s father survived because his bike shielded him from rubble, though he sustained lasting injuries. After the incident, he lived with his grandmother and later worked as a fire service messenger and on Lancaster bombers (Avro). Traumatized, he rarely discussed these experiences, often leaving the room during remembrance events. Linda recalls his struggles, including illiteracy, and his resentment toward his former employer for dismissing apprentices after training.
