War-time letters from Pte Leslie Lloyd Tyler to his mother, 1917-18
Description
This notebook contains transcripts of letters sent by Pte Leslie Lloyd Tyler to his mother between May 1917 and October 1918. He was born in Bilston, Staffordshire, on 9 November 1896. Following his landing at Calais on 22 May 1917, the letters chronicle Tyler's experiences with the South Staffordshire Regiment in France during the First World War. They include descriptions of his duties in the army as Intelligence Officer, driving a tank for the first time, encounters with German POWs, repeated gassings, and setting up camp in a deserted French château.
This document was brought to the attention of the U-Boat Project 1914-18 by Marianne Baron, Borth, who inherited the notebook from her grandfather and kindly allowed us to share it.
