110 postcards sent to Lucy White, of Carmarthen between 1901 and 1910
The front and backs of these 110 postcards , received by my grandmother, Lucy White (b. 1885) between 1901 and 1910, are shown. Most were sent to her home address in Carmarthen, although some were sent to her in London when she was a matriculation candidate for London University taking examinations at the Imperial Institute in South Kensington in 1903 and 1904. Lucy was then staying at the White House Hotel, near the Strand. Others were sent to her whilst she was on holiday in New Quay, Clifton or visiting her fiancé, James in Goodwick.
Many (34) of the postcards cover Welsh places (such as Bangor, Ferryside, Llanstephan, Llandudno, Mumbles, Penarth, Goodwick and Cardiff) and 10 depict churches (such as Llanelly, St Peter’s Carmarthen, Macclesfield and Speldhurst).
There are several postcards from the London area showing Rochester Castle, Windsor, Hampton Court, Royal Holloway College, Imperial Institute, Holborn, Hammersmith Bridge and the General Post Office.
Most of the senders of the postcards were Lucy’s immediate family : her sisters Lillie and Norah, brothers Jack and Harry and her Aunt Georgie. Harry’s postcards were from Hastings, Sark, Killarney and Dieppe with Jack’s from Blackpool, then Kimberley and Johannesburg in South Africa. The first postcard from her fiancé, James was sent in 1905 (and was a humorous one) and thereafter he was a frequent sender.
