Margaret Edge shares her parents' story from World War II. Her British father met her Italian mother during the war, and they moved to England after she became pregnant. Facing prejudice, her mother endured mistreatment from Margaret’s paternal grandmother, who kept her locked in a bedroom. Language barriers and lingering war resentments complicated her mother’s adjustment. Margaret’s father eventually left to marry someone else, with whom he had nine children. Though her father's new wife rejected Margaret due to her Italian heritage, Margaret reflects that she has overcome these difficulties.
